Medical Providers


Alice Kachman, MD, FACP - Medical Director
alice kachman, M.D. Dr. Kachman is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. She is a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who seeís clients who are 18 years and older.

Dr. Kachman earned her Bachelorís degree at Madonna University in 1991. She went on to attend Wayne State University School of Medicine and received her degree of Medical Doctor in 1997. Dr. Kachman completed her residency at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI in 2000, and is board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Kachman has been a member of the American College of Physicians (ACP) since 1997 and was granted Fellow status in ACP in early 2019. She has experience as a primary care physician in both the hospital and office setting.

Josette French, MD - Physician
dr. frenchDr. French is Board Certified in Family Physician. She is a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who sees the entire family, providing adult and pediatric care.

Dr. French received her Bachelor of Science degree from Yale University in New Haven, CT in 1991. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 1995. She completed her residency at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI in 1998.

Dr. French has worked at AIHFS since 1998 and is dedicated to trying to lessen the health disparities seen in the Native community. She is a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan.

She enjoys spending lots of time with her family, getting outside to walk and bike as much as possible, relaxing on Michiganís beautiful beaches, and staying centered with daily meditation and yoga.


Leslie Theisen, MS, NP-C - Family Nurse Practitioner
Leslie TheisenLeslie is Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She is a Primary Care Provider (PCP) who sees the entire family, providing adult and pediatric care.

Leslie earned her Bachelor of Science in Ballet and Health Sciences from Indiana University in 2015. She went to Boston College to get her Master of Science in Nursing in 2018. Leslie worked as a Registered Nurse at Camp Harbor View in Boston, MA prior to work at AIHFS.

One of her favorite experiences as a student was training in Mind Body Medicine, which she hopes to incorporate into her care here at AIHFS. You may drop in at one of Leslieís Yoga Session here at AIHFS on Wednesdays.


Behavioral Health Providers



Mary Alice Bernier, LMSW - Interim Behavioral Health Director
mary alice bernier Mary Alice Bernier is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and received her Masterís Degree from Wayne State University in 2011. Mary is able to provide group and individual counseling for adults, adolescents, families, and children with co-occurring needs including mental health and substance use needs. Mary has experience working: inpatient psychiatric hospitals, outpatient behavioral health clinics, a skilled nursing facility, case management, and with community mental health in both their intake departments and via an ACT team. Mary was previously employed with AIHFS as a Behavioral Health Clinician and returned when an Interim Director Position became available. Mary is passionate about helping others process life stressors and make a realistic path to obtain optimal overall well-being. Mary enjoys going mushroom hunting, hiking, and attends a weekly archery league (but is not a very good shot).


Melissa Chivis, LMSW - Behavioral Health Therapist
melissa chivis Melissa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is a Therapist here at AIHFS. Melissa works with children and adults to provide individual therapy sessions. She is also able to provide Group Therapy, Family Counseling, Couple Counseling, Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment, and other services.

Melissa graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Masters in Social Work in 2014. She previously provided outpatient behavioral health services with her tribal government as a Behavioral Health Clinician for almost two years, and also worked as a Resident Specialist with the Grand Rapids Housing Commission.

Melissa is a member of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi. She enjoys experiencing traditional ceremonies, attending Pow Wows, beading, fishing, mushroom hunting, and spending time with her family and friends. She has a passion for helping the Native community.


Michael Carroll, LLMSW - Behavioral Health Specialist
michael carroll Michael Carroll is a Limited Licensed Clinical Social worker who is housed in the Medical department to provide integrated Behavioral Health care.

Michael earned his Masterís in Social Work from Wayne State University in 2019. Prior to accepting his position here at AIHFS, Michael was an intern for the agency. He is excited to continue his practice with such a vibrant and welcoming community.

In his free time, he enjoys going to concerts and reading.
